Science of the Olympic Winter Games

The National Science Foundation and NBC Learn of NBC News have created a 16 segment video series to showcase the 2010 Winter Olympics and the relationship science has with the athletes. From cross-country skiing to figure skating each winter sport is dissected by scientists and field experts to determine the role and importance of basic science. Fields ranging from biochemistry, physics and mathematics play a critical role in the athlete’s ability to compete on the global scale.

The series was designed to engage students in the importance of science, math and engineering through a popular lens. American Chemical Society President, Joe Francisco, was asked to participate in the series to discuss the role that biochemistry plays in enhancing an athlete’s ability to consume and process oxygen during an endurance test such as cross-country skiing.

This is an amazing idea!! - On 1/11/10 at 10:45 PM Heather Claxton said:
Heather Claxton's Gravatar <div> I really like this idea.  I think it's an excellent way to get kids and even adults interested in learning more about the science behind sports.  My only concern is who will watch this series?  Who knows about this series?  There are a lot of cool science studies/demonstrations/mini series ect, but if no one knows about them, now will watch them.  </div>
